On Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 7.00 p.m., join us as we celebrate the life and music of Arturo Toscanini, the legendary conductor who raised the standards of orchestral and operatic performance over an astonishing 69 years on the podium. 
 
We will share very rare photos, footage, recordings, and rehearsals of Toscanini, as well as interviews with some of the musicians who knew and worked directly with him. The above trailer will give you a sneak-peak of the event.
 
Maestro Cesare Civetta, who is also the author of The Real Toscanini, will be hosting the event with Dr. Joan Kretschmer. Q/A will follow the live online presentation.

Please enjoy a concert/video by talented Juilliard musicians : Percussionist Jeremy Smith and the violin/cello duo called Arkai : Violinist Jonathan Miron & Cellist Philip Sheegog. It was so heartening to watch the musicians perform live, as they made this video. We had goosebumps at the first sound of strings in months, reminding us how fortunate and grateful we are to live in our great city.

On Sunday, February 7, 2021 at 8p.m., watch the live streaming of Hershey Felder as Sholem Aleichem in BEFORE FIDDLER. The play-with-music is filmed on location where events actually took place. This streaming production will feature the stories and characters of Sholem Aleichem. Hershey Felder plays Sholem Aliechem, and will give audiences the true story of what happened "Before Fiddler", along with music that is sure to move the soul.

Soprano Larisa Martinez performed for us in 2016 and introduced our audience to  Bare Opera Company, which we subsequently presented multiple times. She recently married violinist, Joshua Bell, who needs no introduction. They've created this video for us featuring a ballad by Manuel Ponce titled "Estrellita,"

Larisa has been enjoying a successful  career since we first hosted her as an up-and-coming Puerto Rican Soprano.  There are many reasons to love Larisa, and perhaps a Classical Post article will give a partial explanation.  (click here)

The play-with-music  features an extended focus on The Nutcracker Ballet (in honor of Christmas) as well as Tchaikovsky’s life in Florence, Italy where he spent a good deal of time - TCHAIKOVSKY will be filmed LIVE on location where Tchaikovsky actually lived and worked in Florence.

Recorded by musicians for Lyric's CLASSICOOL program (classical music in schools) during the 2020 Covid19 shelter-in-place. Chelsea Knox is the Principal Flute of Met Opera Orchestra, and her husband, Eric Stephenson is the cellist of the award-winning Project Trio. 

A Lyric audience favorite, Robert Langevin is The Principal Flute of New York Philharmonic. We are planning to present him again on October 19, 2020. Here is Robert performing Telemann's Fantasie No. 1 in A Major. His wonderful wife Gretchen took this video on her iPad. Robert is currently practicing repertoire for next season, teaching his students online, taking daily walks, and doing some crossword puzzles.

Our very own Joan Kretschmer plays The Prelude in C Major from J.S. Bach's Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, Book One. When asked how she is spending her time, Joan answered: "I am watching Governor Cuomo's press conferences and admiring his leadership, compassion, effectiveness, ingenuity, flexibility, wry sense of humor and much more. Exercising to keep the blood flowing and endorphins producing by walking briskly in my apartment in rectangles, circles, straight lines for an hour a day. I am giving music lessons via Facetime and Zoom, reading Hans Fallada's Jeder stirbt fur sich allein, writing, practicing the piano, talking to colleagues, friends and relatives, etc. etc. "

Trumpeter Mary Bowden is the founding member of Seraph Brass, America's leading all-female brass quintet which we were planning to host on March 16. Ironic story involving Mary: She was initially invited by Lyric for a solo-recital in March 2017, but we had to cancel because of a major NYC snowstorm. She did perform for us in 2019. And now when she was scheduled to return with Seraph, we had to postpone that concert too. Perhaps we should just skip booking Mary  the first time and present her the second time? Here she is playing an excerpt from Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata with husband, Dave Dash on piano and their cat, Duke.

Cellist Sophie Shao, a laureate of The Avery Fisher career grant performed on our series in 2018. Here is Sophie with her video recording of Allemande from  J.S. Bach's Suite No. 6. When asked how she is keeping herself busy, Sophie responded: "I just re-read Khalil Gibran's The Prophet, binge-watched The Mentalist, am listening to lots of classical music as well as doing an online course on Biology and Human Behavior, and still teaching students at the Univ. of CT remotely." 

Emily Levin is currently the youngest Principal Player of any major orchestra (Dallas). We last presented her in 2018 for a harp recital, and she was going to perform for us on April 7 as part of Davin Levin Duo (harp/guitar). Here she is  playing the Sarabande from J.S. Bach's 5th French Suite. It has been so refreshing to see Emily's upward career trajectory ever since she first performed as a Juilliard student for us in 2015 with her teacher, Nancy Allen - Principal Harp of New York Philharmonic. 

Konstantin Soukhovetski is the laureate of many international competitions. Always immersed in new projects, he is also an actor, composer, entrepreneur, shoe designer and more....He has performed for us in 2014 and 2018. Here is Konstantin playing his own arrangement of a song by Richard Strauss - Morgen. 

Lyric proudly presented Harpist Katherine Siochi in 2017, when she was at Juilliard. She is now the Principal Harp of the Kansas City Symphony. Katherine has recorded the Harp Cadenza from Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor. Katherine tells us that she been spending her time of social distancing enjoying  hobbies she doesn't  normally have time for during a busy orchestra season! Things like yoga, reading books, doing puzzles, and cooking (including trying  to make homemade versions of bread, hummus, almond milk and more.)

Classical & Jazzical Pianist Matt Herskowitz has performed for Lyric multiple times. He will be collaborating with violinist, Lara St. John, in our 2020-2021 season. Stay tuned. Matt is a proud new Dad, and given his demanding schedule, he is delighted to spend time at home with his son these days. Here he is performing Duke Ellington's "It don't mean a thing.

Classical guitarist Colin Davin was going to perform for us on April 7 as part of Davin-Levin Duo (harp/guitar).  Here he is playing his own arrangement of Bach's Sarabande from Cello Suite no. 6, BWV 1012. Colin is  spending his days playing lots of music, of course, and teaching his students at the Cleveland Institute of Music, on ArtistWorks (online). "It's not been an easy time, to say the least" says Colin, "but I'm grateful to have music as my constant companion."

Lyric presented Pianist Yoonie Han in 2018. She is currently with her family in South Korea itching to come back once the dust settles. Here is Yoonie playing a selection from Reynaldo Hahn's Rossignol Eperdu (Bewildered Nightingale). Her sister is behind the phone camera. Yoonie is also the founding member of Gloriosa Piano Trio which we intend to have in the future. 

Konrad Paszkudzki is pianist and founding member of his namesake jazz trio. Their website is www.kpjazztrio.com. Here he is playing his rendition of  “When I Take My Sugar To Tea” written by the songwriting team of Sammy Fain, Irving Kahal and Pierre Norman. We intend to present Konrad Paszkudzki Trio next season. Stay tuned. The group (piano, bass and guitar) is sure to mesmerize us with their arrangements of music from The Great American Songbook.
